I love intuitive making, really, stepping boldly into not knowing can open us up from the inside if we let it… but… I also think it vital and powerful to really know a material, and to know a process. Understanding the potentialities and limitations of a material and how it wants to work with you is really important in a thoughtful and intentional practice. Clay is wonderful for its versatility, little need for tools, and direct hand to material results, but it does have boundaries. Like following the grain when working with wood, there are ways of working with clay that will let you befriend it.

This workshop will cover three foundational hand building techniques; pinching, coiling, and slab building. We will also explore decorative techniques including; impressing, sgraffito, sculpting, and carving. I’ll talk to you about clay formation, the clay to ceramic process, using clay tools and other useful bits to know to help us work kindly and successfully with the material.

If clay is completely new to you, or you’ve experimented but want to learn some foundational techniques, this workshop should give you a good basis to have more confidence and freedom when working with this magical material!!

What to expect:

✺ Time to explore and experiment

✺ Building at least one finished piece (you are welcome to make and fire as many pieces as you like, I will ask for a £5 donation for each piece you’d like firing to go towards costs and my labour, merci x)

The workshop will run from 10am – 5pm with an hour for lunch midway. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch in, otherwise there are several fab cafes and shops to buy food and drinks from nearby.

The price for a space begins at £30. If we get a full group of 10, this should cover the cost for the space, my teaching time, and be something towards material costs. If you’re able, paying a little more means I’m able to give more to support We Make Our Way and pay myself for the work I’ll be doing outside teaching time. There is also a small booking fee when you book a space, I hope this is okay, thank you for your understanding.
