By Our Hands We Make Our Way

Workshop II ~ The Hermit

The retreat into the self and the frost. The thawed re-emergence into the world, with wisdom to share in community.

Workshop II ~ The Hermit

When and Where

14 Nov, 19:00 – 21:00

By Our Hands We Make Our Way, Unit 42, Sneinton Market, Freckingham St, Nottingham NG1 1DQ, UK

What

The Hermit

In the shadow of the temple my friend and I saw a blind man sitting alone.  And my friend said, “Behold the wisest man of our land.” Then I left my friend and approached the blind man and greeted him. And we conversed. After a while I said, “Forgive my question; but since when has thou been blind?” “From my birth,” he answered. Said I, “And what path of wisdom followest thou?” Said he, “I am an astronomer.” Then he placed his hand upon his breast saying, “I watch all these suns and moons and stars.”

- Kahlil Gibran

In the first workshop, we said ‘yes’ to the call to adventure and readied ourselves to step out from the known into the unknown. Now, as we stand in the unfamiliar, we understand that to progress, we must look for wisdom within.

~

The Hermit ventures outside of ordinary society to become lost in a wilderness of solitude. There, they learn the value of patient and profound work. An inner journey is made, to the core of their beliefs and ideals. A commitment is made to these values which dissolves their attachments to desire. After frost comes thaw, and much like a hibernating dormouse in the spring, the hermit must re-emerge. Another threshold is crossed, and the hermit rises from their profound and silent stupor in order to share their learning with their community.

~

In this workshop we will work mostly in our own space, exploring what a practice in solitude looks and feels like. We will work in self-reflection, understanding the wisdom we have within us that could nourish ourselves and our community.
